Mardi Gras on Third
Mardi Gras Observance
Observed During Mardi Gras Season
First Observed: 2024
Mardi Gras on Third is an annual observance honoring the Louisiana traditions carried to San Francisco by Great Migration families whose histories continue to shape Bayview–Hunters Point today.
Developed through years of genealogy research and community engagement, the observance recognizes the enduring influence of Louisiana families whose music, foodways, celebrations, and cultural traditions became woven into the fabric of the neighborhood. Through second-line procession, music, style, and public gathering, Mardi Gras on Third affirms that inherited traditions remain living practices rather than distant memories.
Each year, the observance returns as an invitation to celebrate the cultural inheritance that continues to define San Francisco’s Great Migration community.
This observance returns each year as part of the Celestial Calendar of The Afatasi Universe.
