This piece debuted at the 2026 Futurism Fashion Experience at San Francisco Airport as part of Afatasi’s Medusa collection.
The fabric was purchased in the garment district in Los Angeles. Afatasi was drawn to its two-sided quality, pairing a luminous textured surface with black snakeskin vinyl. The wrap functions like a stole, creating a sculptural frame around the body while emphasizing the material contrast.
The Medusa theme emerged at the end of the Year of the Snake, a transitional moment that connects the work to cycles of change, renewal, protection, and transformation. Through this reference, the snakeskin material becomes more than decorative; it links the garment to mythology, survival, and the power of being seen.
For Afatasi, Medusa also speaks to visibility and scrutiny, particularly the ways Black women are placed under a microscope. The piece considers how beauty standards can become distortions, shaped by pressure, surveillance, and adaptation.
