Futurism Fashion Experience
Black History Month Ritual
Observed annually during Black History Month
First Observance: 2022
The Futurism Fashion Experience (FFE) is an annual Black History Month observance that asks a simple but urgent question:
What does it look like when a community imagines itself into the future?
Created in response to the ongoing cultural loss and displacement of San Francisco’s Great Migration community, FFE was founded to create new ways of observing Black History Month through contemporary fine art, scholarship, and fashion. Bringing together an art exhibition, panel discussion, and runway presentation, the observance honors the history of San Francisco’s Great Migration families while imagining the cultural futures they continue to build.
At the heart of the observance is Fale Afatasi, Afatasi’s evolving house of San Francisco Regalia. Each year, new works debut on the runway as contemporary ceremonial garments designed for future generations. Conceived as Artifacts of a Future Culture, the regalia imagines how Great Migration communities will continue to dress for moments of celebration, civic leadership, graduation, marriage, public ceremony, and cultural ambassadorship.
Rather than asking whether San Francisco’s Great Migration community has a future, the Futurism Fashion Experience begins with the conviction that it does.
Each year’s observance becomes an act of collective imagination—affirming that culture will continue to evolve, create, and flourish for generations to come.
This ritual returns each year as part of the Celestial Calendar of The Afatasi Universe.
