This piece is part of Afatasi’s Black Space series, a body of work exploring futurism, physical space, memory, and the layered histories of San Francisco.
Afatasi had already created the Black Space series when her mentor responded strongly to the idea. Together, they developed the work further, using the Fillmore as a backdrop because it holds histories connected to both of their heritages. The neighborhood carries multiple histories: Japanese residents were forcibly removed and incarcerated during World War II, and Black families later moved into the area, helping shape what became known as the Harlem of the West.
Both artists created futuristic looks in response to this shared site. Afatasi added metal elements to her costume, including a form that references a headset microphone. The gesture suggests communication, transmission, and reporting back: observations and findings being sent to the mothership.
This look was worn at Harlem Fashion Week in New York City in 2023.
