Modalities & Motifs is a 500-foot temporary public artwork created for the Southeast Treatment Plant in Bayview–Hunters Point. Drawing from The Afro Block Party, the work combines recurring characters, graphic patterns, local references, and five historical motifs—Buffalo Soldier, North Star, HeLa, Fade in the Water, and Freedom Day Transfer—to transform construction infrastructure into a large-scale visual archive of memory, lineage, resistance, and San Francisco cultural life.
