Women of Afrofuturism at SFO
Exhibition

Afatasi was part of the Black Space residency at Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. In early 2023, Ashara Ekundayo contacted her to let her know that Nicole Mullen, curator at SFO Museum, was interested in learning more about her work. A few months later, Afatasi and Mullen began a conversation about including Afatasi’s work in an exhibition at SFO Museum.
This connection grew out of the Black Space series, a body of work centered on futurism, physical space, cultural memory, and Black presence in San Francisco. The residency helped create a context for the work to move into a broader public setting, linking Afatasi’s studio practice, performance work, and Afrofuturist vision to the exhibition space of the airport.

“Afrofuturism, an artistic and sociopolitical liberation movement, examines the past, questions the present, and reimagines the futures of Black people. The term was first coined in the 1993 essay “Black to the Future” by writer Mark Dery. Afrofuturism explores the Black experience through a combination of science fiction, magical realism, mythology, history, and technology in genres ranging from literature and music to fashion, film, and visual arts. Afrofuturism may incorporate a range of components—from outer space to the natural world and popular culture.”
