48 Pillars at ARC Gallery
Exhibition
Artists were asked to create two panels, each measuring 1 by 4 feet. My panels are titled The Gates of Io.
The work imagines a futuristic set of gates on another world. I was thinking about what an entrance, threshold, or passageway might look like in an otherworldly landscape. As with much of my sculpture, the piece is made from salvaged metal and scrap materials.
Usually, when I work with scrap, I am responding directly to what I find. For this piece, I still used only scrap metal, but I searched for pieces that could create as much symmetry as possible. That balance between found material and intentional structure became part of the work. The panels are still made from salvaged metal, but they point toward something futuristic, architectural, and imagined.
