Moonscape I imagines an otherworldly terrain of mountains beneath an enormous celestial body, built entirely from scrap steel. First exhibited in Chasing Dreams at the African American Arts and Culture Complex, the work also marks an important turn in Afatasi’s practice: welding becomes not only a method of construction, but a language of mark-making across the sculpture’s surface.
